Race brief

GovernorLieutenant Governor

What the office does

The governor directs the executive branch, proposes budgets, signs or vetoes bills, and appoints many agency leaders. The lieutenant governor presides over the Senate, breaks ties, and succeeds the governor. Most large tax, housing, criminal-law, and energy changes still require legislation or valid agency action.

The race, Oct 17, 2026

Hochul/Adams are favored, not certain. Marist measured 53% to 42%, Emerson 52% to 40%, and Siena 50% to 41%. Pollfinity, a self-funded text-message pollster, found 48% to 47% head to head among registered voters. The incumbent ticket also held a large closing-month cash advantage.

Hochul

The illegal Trump-Blakeman tariffs are devastating small businesses. @Grace4NY, @DRichardsQNS, NYS Senator John Liu, @SandraForNY1, and I visited businesses in Flushing to talk about the rising costs caused by the tariff tax hikes – and how we’re standing up to Trump’s attacks.

In just one year, more than 15,000 New Yorkers have taken advantage of free community college. And we’re not stopping there. Soon tens of thousands more will be able to earn a degree tuition-free, because the cost of college should never keep someone from building a better future.

Kathy Hochul's solar sprawl is cannibalizing our state's most precious resource: our farmland. Between 2024 and 2025 alone, New York lost 500 farms and 100,000 acres of land—with 80% of that devastating hit crushing small, family-owned operations.

As Governor, I’ll eliminate state income tax on the first $50,000 for single filers, and $100,000 for married couples. Let’s make New York a place families can afford to stay. Stand with me. Support my tax relief plan.

The read

Hochul

Experienced Democratic continuity with resources and an enacted record on child care and public safety, plus ongoing housing and transit policies; the central liability is whether those programs have improved affordability and delivery fast enough.

Sources 3, 4, 8Counterpoints 5, 7

Blakeman

Republican change built around tax relief, public safety, immigration enforcement, energy expansion, and local control; the central question is whether county-scale experience and promises can survive Albany constraints.

If elected

Hochul

  1. A second full term would likely continue large state investments in child care, schools, Medicaid, housing, and public safety rather than pivot to broad spending cuts.

    Sources 3, 4Counterpoints 5, 6

  2. Housing policy would likely keep combining subsidies, tenant protections, local incentives, and zoning bargains; implementation speed and construction economics would remain the limiting factors.

    Sources 3, 8Counterpoints 5, 7

  3. For New York City, the ticket would likely preserve congestion pricing and negotiated city-state work on transit, child care, housing, and immigration protections.

    Sources 9, 10Counterpoints 21

Blakeman

  1. The administration would likely propose income-tax cuts, property-tax rebates, utility-rate restraints, and removal of climate-related charges, seeking immediate household savings.

    Sources 15, 16Counterpoints 5

  2. Criminal-justice and immigration policy would likely shift toward more detention discretion, attempted bail-law repeal, stronger police support, and renewed cooperation with federal immigration enforcement.

    Sources 16, 17Counterpoints 9

  3. New York City would likely face attempts to end congestion pricing, reverse climate mandates, and increase state pressure on local immigration and sex-separated sports policies.

Party and independence

Hochul

The ticket is firmly aligned with the Democratic and Working Families coalition. Hochul’s congestion-pricing pause and negotiated public-safety changes show tactical independence, not an ideological break.

Sources 3, 8, 11Counterpoints 21

Blakeman

The ticket is closely aligned with Republican and Conservative organizations, law-enforcement constituencies, and President Trump. Compliance with the state 287(g) ban shows legal pragmatism, not a policy break.

Best case for

Hochul

The strongest case is implementation experience: enacted budgets and negotiated state-city programs give the ticket a documented path from proposal to administration.

Sources 4, 10Counterpoints 5, 7

Blakeman

The strongest case is an executive check on long Democratic control, backed by county management experience, a no-tax-increase proposed budget, and stronger support among independents in current polls.

Sources 12, 13, 19, 20Counterpoints 5

Best case against

Hochul

The strongest case against is accountability for persistent affordability pressure, projected budget gaps, incomplete housing delivery, and reversals that can make long-term policy look politically contingent.

Sources 5, 7, 21Counterpoints 4, 8

Blakeman

The strongest case against is that major tax, bail, climate, and city-policy promises require legislative, regulatory, or judicial cooperation, and his sports policy has produced continuing litigation.

Still open

Hochul

Can the ticket convert record appropriations and negotiated plans into enough housing, child-care capacity, lower bills, and safer streets without widening future budget gaps?

Sources 4, 5, 6, 7

Blakeman

What spending cuts or replacement revenue would finance the tax and utility promises, and which first-100-days proposals could survive the Legislature, regulators, and courts?
